E-commerce Case Study: Brandy Carr Nurseries

Brandy Carr Nurseries is a family owned grower of rhubarb and liquorice based in the famous Rhubarb Triangle in West Yorkshire. Brandy Carr Nurseries had an existing website that they had been running for some time. Brandy Carr Nurseries approached us with the goal of redesigning this site. Their current website had been designed by an ex colleague and despite generating a few sales there was significant scope to improve it.

We were keen to dive into consultation and spent a significant time discussing the nurseries present problems and goals for the future. We established that Brandy Carr Nurseries were keen to increase their sales, sort out problems relating to payment processing and managing orders and increase their visibility online. Through our additional research we also determined that past development decisions were harming their marketing potential. In particular past domain name changes, a lack of set up and other outstanding issues had damaged the companies visibility in search engine results. We knew that ignoring any of these legacy issues would make it a lot harder for the nursery to rank high in search engine results, no matter how pretty the final design was. Resolving all of these issues became our top priority, undoing potential adverse factors before we even began the project. As the Brandy Carr Nurseries had been online for years, we were also careful not to change the page structure to ensure any search rankings were retained. Keyword optimisation of all written content combined with resolving these issues meant that the website saw increases in it’s rankings for many different relevant keywords.

At the beginning of the build we agreed the fundamentals, including a brand colour scheme, fonts and broad styles. Armed with a completed customer profile and a key call to action, we set to work recreating the website. This started with reimagining the website navigation so that users didn’t have to work hard to find what they were after. The prior website’s analytic data showed a high bounce rate, giving us an insight into how visitors were using the site and evidencing that key pages were not performing well. Reordering and padding out information pages and a clear pathway to order products has halved this bounce rate and increased time spent on the website. A new, user friendly product categorisation also means that customers can search varieties in new ways, quickly finding the perfect product and greatly reducing fatigue.

“The new design and potential of these new tools has meant that Brandy Carr Nurseries has seen a significant increase in sales and interest in the brand.”

Of course the site functions as a fully operational e-commerce store, syncing with a back office system to manage stock levels, product management, processing payments and more. We also took time to introduce a blogging platform and integrate the nurseries social media accounts. This allows the organisation to take advantage of a 360 degree digital marketing approach to increase their sales. The new design and potential of these new tools has meant that Brandy Carr Nurseries has seen a significant increase in sales and interest in the brand.

As we do with every web design project, we paid particular attention to securing the website against potential risks. We did this by patching common known vulnerabilities, installing malware protection and installing an SSL certificate. All site elements have also been optimised for speed, scoring 95 (A-rating) on popular page speed tools.

We also provided support with regards to email set up, troubleshooting and resolving issues that had been plaguing the nursery, greatly increasing their admin processes. Alongside this, we worked with Brandy Carr Nurseries to improve their reputation management which included updating their online presence and responding to user reviews. The final steps of the project involved face to face staff training, allowing the company to manage their own orders and post new blog content.

Brandy Carr Nurseries also opted for our monthly website care package so we log in regularly to update software, manage automatic backups and are always around when any guidance or troubleshooting is required.

We look forward to working with Brandy Carr Nurseries into the future.
